19th Century High Tech Firearms

Gordon’s Gun Closet Archives: episode 008

(Editor’s note):*A few days ago a question popped up in one of the many writing groups/fora where I (NF) am wont to lurk. The topic was the dearth of firearms in fantasy settings, and it begat a conversation that was basically, "Why not?" It put me in mind of a talk Gordon gave at a convention years ago on innovative arms in the 19th century, which we aired on the GGC podcast years ago, so here it is!

This is the audio from Gordon’s “Victorian High Tech Firearms” presentation at Westercon/GearCon on July 2, 2016 in Portland, OR. They gave him an hour and a half, so it’s an extra-long episode at about 75 minutes. Apologies for the low tech sound; all part of the vagueries of field recording.

Show notes and links:

We should probably do this whole thing as a video with still images over the audio. Someday. In the meanwhile, here’s a stack of pics.

Henry flat cartridge
Dreyse needle gun
Dutch Ostafrik Askari, ca. 1914
The Galand, just about the most Steampunky revolver there is.
Smith & Wesson 2nd model Russian
RCMP “mountie”, late 19th c.

* I guess I’m the “editor”, since I’m formatting and posting these old episodes, right? —NF
